14-YEAR-OLD HUANG YUTENG DEFENDS CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AT THE 17TH MISSION HILLS GOLFATHON GRAND FINAL
[Dongguan, China -- 18th September 2020] The 17th season of the Mission Hills Golfathon, held over the past five months, wrapped up today with the Grand Final held at Mission Hills Dongguan. 14-year-old Huang Yuteng from Taiwan, China beat some 120 players at the Olazabel course with a total of 74 strokes to defend his title. In addition, the Men's overall championship was won by Wu Liguo, with Mei Jian clinching the Women's overall championship, while Li Jian took home the Men's evergreen championship. While the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a slight dip in participation, this year’s Golfathon event continues to attract more than 8,000 participants, marking a rebound in golfing events within Mainland China.
For Huang, he will automatically qualify to play the 18th edition of the Mission Hills Golfathon, as well as enjoy a vacation package at Mission Hills Haikou, comprising 2-nights’ accommodation at a spa villa, green vouchers and more. Winners in other categories also won vacation packages at Mission Hills Haikou. The event this year is supported by the British luxury all-terrain SUV brand – Land Rover – which set a hole-in-one award on the 17th hole of the Olazabel Course: a Range Rover Sport HSE valued at RMB 1 million!
Last year, Huang won the 2019 Mission Hills Golfathon with a score of 72 at the Rose-Poulter Course. He also recently participated in the Mission Hills Junior Series, HSBC Championship Hengdian Leg, Buick Championship Huazhong Leg amongst other events, keeping up his top form. As a frequent participant of Mission Hills tournaments, Huang was quite confident about defending his title, saying: “To hone my skills prior to the Grand Final, I sought to improve technical details with coaching sessions at the Mission Hills PGA Golf Academy.” He also committed to many practice sessions to familiarise himself with the grounds, and strived to maintain results that were close to par.
Since its inception in 2004, the Mission Hills Golfathon has attracted more than 120,000 golfers from around the world, with players competing to play 10 world-class golf courses at Mission Hills featuring designers from five continents over the summer. “Due to the ongoing pandemic and related travel restrictions, we have seen a slight dip in overall participants. Nonetheless, we continue to see brisk interest from overseas members and golfers who wanted to join the Golfathon this year,” said Mr. Han Zhishan, General Manager of Mission Hills Golf Club.
Mr. Tenniel Chu, Vice-Chairman of Mission Hills Group added, “The Mission Hills Golfathon is a unique concept that we developed to connect China and the world through sports. It is not only a celebration of golf, but also a symbol of unity and friendship. We look forward to growing the event further after the pandemic eases, as we remain steadfast in our commitment to bring China to the world, and the world to China.”
